According to initial information, the weapon belonged to the father of the woman’s two young children. None of the children were injured in the incident. “If you have a firearm, please keep it locked and secured,” Wesh told police officer Roberto Ruiz Jr. “Incidents like this could be avoided,” she added.
The incident comes as the United States has witnessed an increase in firearm-related crime. There have been at least 369 inadvertent shootings of children under the age of 18 in 2020 and 142 people were killed in such incidents, according to gun control advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety.
