Marília Mendonça, the most listened to Brazilian artist on Spotify in 2019 and 2020, died today in a plane crash, according to her public relations firm. In March 2015, Mendonça started dating the businessman Yugnir Ângelo, with whom she became engaged in December 2016. She ended the relationship in August 2017, stating she was too young for such a commitment. The couple got engaged and moved in together. On 5 November 2021, Mendonça embarked on an air taxi with four other people on board towards Caratinga, Minas Gerais, Brazil, where she was expected to perform in a local concert. The plane crashed, killing Mendonça, her uncle (who was also her manager), her producer and two crew members. All five deaths were officially confirmed shortly after on a live coverage by TV Globo.

Four other people died with her. Photographs and videos show the plane just below a waterfall. Soccer superstar Neymar, a close friend of the singer, wrote on Twitter: “I refuse to believe it, I refuse.” Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said that “the entire country” was “shocked” by the news of his death, while Rio de Janeiro Governor Claudio Castro called his loss a “tragic accident.” He mourned the death of “one of the greatest artists of his generation.”

“Young and talented, Marília was the protagonist of a new chapter of Brazilian country music and inspiration for several singers in the segment. The country is shocked and regrets this loss that came too soon, ”Castro said in a press release. Mendonça is reportedly survived by a one-year-old son.
