Police allege the 22-year-old had been drinking vodka before leaving his room at the Moon Beach Resort naked just after midnight. Simeulue Police Chief, Senior Commissioner Jatmiko, alleged that Risby-Jones struck a security guard in the neck, causing him to fall to the ground as he was leaving the hotel.

The police chief alleged that the 22-year-old knocked a local man off his motorcycle and then threw the bike on top of him after he landed in the ditch. He said the cyclist’s lower leg was split open requiring 50 stitches, and police got involved after his wife filed a report.
Risby-Jones, originally from Noosa on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, now faces a charge under Article 351 of Indonesia’s penal code. The mistreatment charge resulting in serious bodily injury carries a maximum sentence of five years behind bars.
Sharia law applies in Aceh, where the sale and consumption of alcohol is prohibited and public beatings still take place for moral offenses. People who visit and live in the province can be flogged for drinking alcohol, being homosexual, having premarital sex, and acts of adultery.

Senior Commissioner Jatmiko said locals were so enraged after hearing about the injured motorcyclist that they threatened to burn down the 22-year-old’s hotel.
‘Knowing about it, people got angry and almost burned down the complex. Fortunately, the local police and the village chief managed to calm the mob down,” he said. Exceptions to Aceh’s alcohol ban can be made for tourists who choose to drink in private, the police chief explained.
He said police had allowed Risby-Jones to bring in a bottle of alcohol, saying officers had the right to search luggage at the airport due to Sharia law. The Noosa man told police he had come to Simeulue Island with a partner as part of a three-week surf holiday in Indonesia.
Three Indonesian men received 40 baton strokes each after they were accused of drinking in the ultra-conservative province in 2021. Aceh is the only province in Indonesia where Sharia law is applied. The pristine beaches and clean breaks at Simeulue make the island popular with surfers.
