New Hanover High School was closed after reports of a shooting, just before 12 p.m. local time on Monday, August 30. Parents were asked to stay away from the building amid reports of the shooting. The high school board confirmed the news of the closure.

“New Hanover High School is currently closed. We are asking families NOT to come to the building. Police are currently on the scene. We will update our New Hanover High School families as more information becomes available,” a statement issued by the high school board said.

A similar incident was reported at Washington Middle School in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in which a 13-year-old thug fired six bullets. A sixth-grade girl at Rigby High School in Idaho launched into shootings, wounding three before being arrested in May. Earlier this month, former Oregon school janitor Kristopher Clay was arrested for stockpiling weapons for mass shootings.

New Hanover Sheriff’s Office Lt. Jerry Brewer confirmed that a student was shot and taken to hospital. The official statement from the sheriff’s office read: “NHSO is on scene at New Hanover High School where students are being evacuated to Williston High School for a shooting. Parents will need to pick up their children from the MLK Center once school is over. an accurate count. ”

Along with the closure, authorities also blocked roads near the school. A spokesman for New Hanover County Schools said the sheriff’s office confirmed this is not an active shooter situation. The school board said in a press release: “New Hanover High School students and staff have been escorted to Williston Middle School by the Sheriff’s Department following a shooting on the New Hanover High School campus. The Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that this is NOT a shooter situation.

Once a full count is done, students will be taken to the MLK center at 401 S 8th street, where they will be released to their parents. Williston Middle School and Gregory Elementary are safe under a shelter in place. Students from these two schools will not be released to their families at this time.
