Tom Metzger was an American white supremacist, skinhead leader and Klansman. He founded White Aryan Resistance (WAR) in 1983. He was a Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan in the 1970s. Metzger voiced strong opposition to immigration to the United States. He was incarcerated in Los Angeles County, California, and Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and was also the subject of several lawsuits and government inquiries. He, his son, and WAR were fined $12 million as a result of the murder of an Ethiopian by skinheads affiliated with WAR.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1961 until 1964 when he moved to Southern California to work in the electronics industry. For a short time, he was a member of the right-wing group the John Birch Society, and attended anti-Communist luncheon meetings sponsored by the Douglas Aircraft Corporation.

By 1968 Metzger had moved to Fallbrook, California, and he supported Democrat-turned-independent George C. Wallace for President. Metzger stopped paying taxes in the 1970s, and by 1972 his tax protest over the Vietnam War had destroyed his thriving television business but introduced him to other tax protesters who, he said, were “atheist racists, Christian Identity racists, Nazis, all kinds of people.

Metzger made a mainstream appearance in 1992 when he was interviewed by Whoopi Goldberg.

Metzger became known internationally in 2003 when he appeared in the Louis Theroux documentary Louis and the Nazis. He is shown to have been working as a television repairman while also writing racist propaganda and speaking at white supremacist events on the side.

In 1980, he controversially won the Democratic nomination for a congressional seat in Southern California. In 2019, the San Diego Union-Tribune quoted Metzger as telling members of his WAR collective, “We are in a white civil war. Our white leaders are traitors to their race and Jews assist them in our destruction.”

Metzger, unlike fellow white supremacists David Duke and Richard Spencer, was not fully supportive of Donald Trump’s policies. Metzger tweeted multiple times in 2020 to say that he did not vote for Donald Trump in 2016.

Metzger was forced to file for bankruptcy in 1990 after a jury awarded $12.5 million to the family of Ethiopian immigrant Mulugeta Seraw who was beaten to death in Portland, Oregon, by a group of skinheads who later said they had been radicalized by Metzger and his son, John’s, literature, according to a Time Magazine feature.

Metzger died on November 4 in Hemet, California at the age of 82 years old. His death was announced in a post on his website, Resist.com.

Cause of death wasn’t immediately known.

Nick Martin, editor of The Informant, which covers hate and extremism in America, tweeted: “If David Duke is America’s best-known white supremacist in the past 40 or so years, then Tom Metzger was arguably No. 2. His influence on organized racism in the US was large, and he even had sway with a number of young neo-Nazis in recent years.”
