The alleged gunman accused of killing Olivia Pratt-Korbel broke down in court when he told the jury: “I am a father. They blame me for killing a child.” Thomas Cashman claimed that at the time of the shooting, on August 22, he was “talking and smoking a joint” as he counted thousands of pounds of drug money at a friend’s house a few streets away.

Olivia, a nine-year-old schoolgirl, was allegedly shot in the chest in her own home by 34-year-old Mr Cashman, who the court was told had been “ruthlessly and relentlessly persecuting” another man, Joseph Nee, in Knotty Ash, Liverpool. At Manchester Crown Court on Wednesday, Cashman, a father of two, was emotional as he testified in his defense and denied any involvement in the shooting.

Professor John Cooper, KC, defending, said: “He is charged with serious crimes and one crime in particular that could not be more serious.” Mr Cashman then broke down in tears, before replying: “I get blamed for killing a child. I have my own children. I’m not a murderer, I’m a father. They blame me for something I haven’t done.”

The defendant, who admitted to being a “high-end cannabis dealer” earning up to £250,000 a year, said that around 9:15 p.m. m. on the night of the shooting he was with a friend, Craig Byrne. He told the court that they went to Mr Byrne’s house, where they counted around £10,000 in cash in his spare bedroom.

He added: “We counted the money and then we went downstairs, I made myself a joint in the kitchen, I went to the back garden and I was having a general chat with Craig.” Cashman said that when he later went to the front lawn, he could hear sirens and someone told him there were “police everywhere.” Cashman also accused a key witness in the trial, who he cannot be named for legal reasons, of “stitching him up” and wanting to “ruin him.”
