A young Rutland, Vermont police officer was killed in a collision with a suspect police were pursuing Friday afternoon. According to the Vermont State Police, 19-year-old Jessica Ebbighausen began working part-time for the Rutland Police Department on May 23.

Break-in suspect injured in Rutland City car crash

Tate Rheaume, 20, was wanted by police for allegedly trying to break into a home on East Washington Street. Ebbighausen was one of the officers chasing Rheaume, according to state police. According to state police, Rheaume allegedly fled in his car from a Rutland officer shortly before three o’clock. Ebbighausen was one of the units that responded to offer assistance.

The pursuit continued from East Washington Street to the intersection with Woodstock Avenue. Rheaume is believed to have crossed the center line into the eastbound lanes during the two-mile pursuit and crashed into Officer Ebbighausen’s vehicle. He also hit a different Rutland police car. No one from the pursuing cruiser was injured in the accident.

Rheaume and the other two Rutland police officers sustained injuries in the crash. All three were sent to Rutland Regional Medical Center. Officer Ebbighausen’s passenger is still being treated at the hospital. After receiving treatment, the officer who was operating the second eastbound cruiser was released. Rheaume was transferred to Burlington’s University of Vermont Medical Center. His injuries are not supposed to be life-threatening.

Vermont State Police are investigating how speed and impairment contributed to the crash. Investigators and the Rutland County State’s Attorney are discussing possible charges. For at least the next 12 hours, the Vermont State Police and the Department of Fish and Wildlife will serve as the primary law enforcement agencies for the city.
