A Manson Family member, Leslie Van Houten, who was part of the cult that murdered multiple people in Los Angeles in the summer of 1969, may be released from prison in the coming weeks. However, two other Manson Family members who participated in the Tate and Labianca murders, namely Charles “Tex” Watson and Patricia Krenwinkel, remain in jail. Both had parole requests rejected by Newsom in 2021 and 2023.
Who is Charles “Tex” Watson?
Charles “Tex” Watson was formerly a member of the Manson Family. Tex Watson and three other Manson Family members broke into Sharon Tate’s Los Angeles home in 1969. They savagely killed Tate, who was eight months pregnant at the time, and the four other occupants of the home. Leno and Rosemary LaBianca were also murdered in their home the following night by Watson and other Family members.
After his capture, Tex Watson was charged with seven counts of first degree murder and one count of conspiracy to murder. He was convicted on all counts in 1971 and sentenced to death. However, after the California Supreme Court ruled that the state’s death penalty law was unconstitutional, his sentence was later reduced to life in prison.
Who is Patricia Krenwinkel?
Patricia Krenwinkel, sometimes called “Katie” or “Big Patty,” was once a member of the Manson Family. Krenwinkel, like Charles “Tex” Watson, played a key role in the 1969 Tate-LaBianca murders. Similarly, she also participated in the murder of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca the following night at her home.
On August 16, 1969, Krenwinkel and other Manson Family members were arrested. She was convicted in 1971 of seven counts of first degree murder and one count of conspiracy to murder. She received a death sentence, similar to that of Charles Watson, which was eventually reduced to life in prison.
Patricia Krenwinkel claims to have experienced a personal evolution while she was behind bars and has acknowledged her regret for her role in the crimes.
