Scott Peterson has been seen smiling on a rare video call with his family from prison, as he files a new appeal over his 2004 conviction for the murder of his wife and unborn child. A new image from the May 22, 2022 video call, obtained by Fox News, shows the convicted murderer grinning from ear to ear during a prison conference call. Janey Peterson, his sister-in-law, said he was sitting in a cell wearing a gray shirt and prison uniform, but the virtual background made it look like he was sitting by a window near some trees.
In October, a judge removed him from death row on charges of jury bias when he was convicted nearly two decades ago. He is now fighting his sentence. The new image comes amid a new development in his case. According to Fox, Peterson has filed a new 800-page habeas corpus petition in a California appeals court.
He allegedly argues that his family has found new evidence proving his innocence, but the document, filed on April 19, has not been made public. In August 2020, the California Supreme Court overturned his death sentence, and in 2022 he was transferred to Mule Creek State Prison, east of Sacramento.
