Michael Allen was pronounced dead at the scene following an altercation near the Eclipse nightclub in Bodmin just after 3 am. Sunday. Tributes are being paid to a ‘much loved’ amateur rugby player who was stabbed to death in a Cornish nightclub during an incident that left seven others injured.
Two people remain in hospital while they recover from surgery after the attack, while another five people injured in the incident have since been released. A statement from Mr. Allen’s family, issued by Devon and Cornwall Police, said: “Mike was simply a much-loved son, brother, grandson, and uncle, who loved his dogs.”
Friends have also left messages via a tribute website set up at Bodmin Rugby Club. Paying tribute to the rugby player, Bodmin RFC said Mr. Allen’s humor had left a mark on the club. Friend Lachlan Blackshaw posted on Facebook a photo of Mr. Allen, nicknamed ‘Chapel’, in his rugby uniform. The post read: ‘It was a pleasure Chapel. Brother forgot. He runs hard forever. A second friend, Ollie Brooks, posted: ‘It was a pleasure Chabel. He flies high bro.
Aran Pridham posted on Facebook: “Rest in peace, Mike will never forget you for the happy and amazing person you were, you will be sorely missed x-friend.” Detectives were given more time today to question a 24-year-old man from the city who has been arrested on suspicion of murder, attempted murder, and intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Police were called at 3:15 a.m. on Sunday to the Victoria Square area of Castle Canyke Road following reports of a person with a knife and several people with suspected stab wounds.
Police officers will be there to help support the local community and a community center will operate from 4:00 p.m. m. to 6:00 p.m. m. on Monday and then twice a day from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. m. to noon and 4:00 p.m. m. to 6:00 p.m. m. during the next week.
The Eclipse nightclub wrote on Facebook: “Everyone at Eclipse is deeply saddened by the incident on Castle Canke Road in the early hours of Sunday and our thoughts are with the victims and their families at this time.”

Chris Rich added: “I literally can’t believe what I heard. Always such a lovely guy you didn’t deserve to have something like that happen to you and no one should have to worry about going out and having something like that happen. Absolutely vile.
And Christine Zammit said: ‘So sad, another good one taken too soon. Thinking of all his friends and family at this tragic time. This world is a cruel place.
Forensic teams were combing the street outside the nightclub yesterday, which is opposite the headquarters of the 165 Port and Maritime Regiment RLC, one of the largest reserve units in the British Army. A forensic officer searching a bush appeared to be holding a foot-long knife.
Inspector Ilona Rosson said the force was treating the attack as an isolated matter and no one else was wanted in connection with the stabbings. She added: “This is a live and active police investigation and I urge people not to speculate on social media, but if you have any information that could help us please report it.”
Superintendent Rob Youngman said it was not yet known if the victim and the alleged shooter knew each other.
He added: ‘We are currently working to continue to understand the motivation behind this incident. The relationship, if any, between those involved is unclear at this stage. We believe that some members of the group who were injured had been at the Eclipse nightclub. They were outside on Castle Canyke Road when the incident occurred.

Superintendent Youngman also urged anyone who might have video footage of the area to provide it to detectives. Cornwall Councilor Leigh Frost described the attack as “shocking and devastating”.
“Bodmin is a small town and it’s not plagued by crime, it’s quite a friendly place,” she added. ‘We are a strong community and we will come together and get through this together. My thoughts are with everyone involved, the victim and her family.
“I also commend the emergency services for responding so quickly and the police for ensuring there is a full investigation.”
Bodmin Mayor Phil Cooper said the council was “saddened by this tragic incident”.
“We never expected this to happen in our city and I send thoughts and best wishes to the families of all those affected,” he added.
“Bodmin is a fantastic community and we will support the victims and their families in any way we can.”
Mike was a keen rugby player for Bodmin RFC and rival rugby clubs lined up to pay their respects to him.
Camelford RFC said: “We extend our deepest and heartfelt condolences to Bodmin RFC, and all family and friends, following the tragic news of Mike Allen’s passing.”
Helston RFC added: ‘The thoughts of everyone here at Helston RFC are with Bodmin RFC today. We will all feel the tragic loss of Mike Allen. Our condolences to his family, friends, and his club. Detective Inspector Ilona Rosson of the Major Crimes Investigation Team said: “Our investigation is continuing into this matter and we continue to ask the public for help.
‘If you have any information related to this murder and have not yet spoken to the police, please come immediately. The information to be had, no matter how small you think it might be, could be vital to our investigation.
