Mark Capps, a Grammy Award-winning record producer, was shot and killed by police in Nashville after an investigation into a kidnapping claim turned violent on Thursday, January 5, 2023.

Partial body camera footage released by Nashville police captured the deadly encounter in which 54-year-old Mark Capps was fatally shot by police officers after confronting officers at his door with a handgun.

The SWAT team was dispatched to Capps’ home after his 60-year-old wife and his 23-year-old stepdaughter filed a complaint that the suspect had held them hostage at gunpoint inside Capps’ home. him the night before. Shortly after the incident, at a news conference, Metropolitan Nashville Police Department spokesman Don Aaron said that Mark Capps was shot in his home on January 5, 2023. Aaron added that SWAT officer Kendall Coon, a 14-year veteran of the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, made the tactical decision to fire his weapon after discerning that the gun-wielding suspect posed an active threat at the scene.

Police reportedly arrived at Mark Capps’ home to take him into custody after warrants were issued for his arrest just before 2 p.m. Thursday. Capps was charged with two counts of aggravated kidnapping and two counts of aggravated assault for holding his wife and stepdaughter at gunpoint in their living room around 3 a.m. the same day.

Capps then threatened them to stay put and not call the authorities or they would be killed.

Authorities have yet to determine the potential motive behind the deceased suspect’s violent actions against his family. In a statement, Don Aaron said:

“The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and this department are conducting extensive investigations into the use of force. This investigation is in the early stages and will take time to complete. In the coming days, TBI and the County District Attorney’s Office Davidson will continue to investigate and analyze this incident.”

He added:
