Marilyn Tackett Cause of Death

A 77-year-old woman died after testing positive for COVID-19 during her recent Carnival Vista cruise.

The woman was identified by the New York Times as Marilyn Tackett. She had been on a cruise ship where a passenger and 26 crew members tested positive in late July and early August after leaving Galveston, Texas, on July 31. The ship was carrying 2,895 passengers and 1,441 crew members, most of whom were fully vaccinated.

Tackett “was so excited to make her first trip outside of the United States,” revealed her granddaughter Tara Cameron on a GoFundMe page created on August 6.

After she tested positive, the 77-year-old was hooked up to a ventilator at a Belize hospital, Cameron said. The family raised enough money to bring her loved one back to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where a doctor told them she was in “critical condition.”

On August 15, Cameron updated GoFundMe and wrote, “We just wanted to go ahead and thank you all for your support, love and prayers. Memaw fought for as long as she could. To know that she has been reunited with her lost loved ones and that now is enjoying the presence of the Lord is a great comfort. We will always miss her, love her and continue to keep her legacy alive. ”

“We will continue to walk in Faith as she taught us and we will try to spread love and kindness as she did,” added Tackett’s grandson. “Please, she continues to keep her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in her prayers as we put her to rest. And she knows that we love and appreciate them all.”

It is unclear if Tackett had been vaccinated prior to her cruise trip.

In a statement obtained by PEOPLE, Carnival said that Tackett likely did not contract COVID while she was aboard her ship. “We are very sorry to hear of the death of a guest who boarded Carnival Vista,” wrote a representative. “The guest almost certainly did not contract COVID on our ship, and she was assisted with expert medical care on board and was eventually evacuated from Belize after we provided a resource to her family.”

Regarding its health and safety measures, the cruise line said: “Carnival has implemented a set of protocols that are designed to flex as needed to adapt to the changing public health situation related to COVID-19. We comply with the standards for a vaccinated cruise ship. ” as defined by the CDC, with at least 95 percent of our guests and our entire crew vaccinated, and then implementing additional measures, as we now require that vaccinated guests present proof of vaccination and a negative COVID test in the check-in. ”

“The few guests who cannot be vaccinated undergo two tests before boarding the ship, and again upon disembarking. And all guests are required to wear masks in the interior areas of the ship where people gather, such as dining rooms, theaters, and casinos. “the statement read. continued. “Unfortunately, no place on land or at sea is COVID-free at this time, but we are committed to protecting the health and safety of our guests, crew, and the communities we visit and have not hesitated to act quickly and go beyond existing public health guidelines. ”

A Carnival spokesperson told PEOPLE in a statement at the time of the outbreak that they were “handling a small number of positive COVID cases at Carnival Vista out of Galveston.” We have managed the situation using strict health protocols that included placing those who tested positive in isolation and close contacts in quarantine, “said a spokesman for the cruise line.

A press release from the Belize Tourism Board announced in a statement at the time that no new cases were found on the ship after August 11.

Carnival also announced that they will implement a new policy beginning August 15 that requires all vaccinated guests to also show proof of a negative COVID test taken within 24 hours of departure, a rule that was already in effect for guests. not vaccinated. Carnival cruise passengers must be vaccinated unless they have a medical or religious exemption or are children under the age of 12 who are not eligible.
