Speaking to ABC News, Carl said 36-year-old Demarcus died just one day before he married his fiancée. The couple had initially planned to tie the knot in July 2020, but were forced to postpone their nuptials amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the outlet reported.

Demarcus Dunn Unvaccinated Lieutenant Dies One Day Before His Wedding
Baker police Lt. Demarcus Dunn, 36, succumbed to the virus Aug. 13, the day before the father of three was set to walk down the aisle with fiancée Francine James, The Advocate reported. The pair was set to get hitched in July 2020, but the ceremony was postponed to Aug. 14 because of the pandemic, said Baker’s police chief and Dunn’s cousin, Carl Dunn, to ABC News.
“She’s lost without him,” the chief said of James.
Dunn — an Air Force veteran who was named Baker’s Officer of the Year in 2016 — tested positive in late July. He was not vaccinated despite being required to get the immunization by the department, Carl Dunn said.
“It was upsetting to me that he hadn’t gotten [the COVID-19 vaccine] and I didn’t know for sure that he hadn’t gotten it until it was all over,” Carl explained. Demarcus’s battle with COVID-19 began on July 29 when he notified Carl that he had tested positive for the virus, according to ABC News.
Carl told the outlet that his cousin’s symptoms included a headache, cough, and shortness of breath, but despite that, he “always sounded optimistic” when they chatted every day.
“Even the day he was hooked up to the ventilator, I spoke to him that morning and he said he wasn’t feeling bad,” Carl explained to ABC News, adding that Demarcus never revealed why he didn’t get the vaccine. and that it was not a requirement for the police department.
Things got worse when Demarcus was hooked up to a ventilator on August 10. Sadly, he never logged out and died only three days later, ABC News reported. I know he was a strong-willed and fighter, “Carl told the outlet.” I kept telling myself that he was going to make it and I kept reassuring the family that I knew he would make it. ”

In the wake of his passing, Carl finds comfort in all the memories he, and the rest of the Baker community had with Demarcus. In his Facebook post, Carl noted how his cousin spent most of his free time training local children and serving as a mentor.
“I asked him how she could take all the free time from him and dedicate it to training the children,” Carl wrote. “I said, ‘Demarcus, you have a family. How can you coach Pee Wee Football, Pee Wee Basketball, Little League Baseball (2 teams) and also mentor so many little kids?'”
“He responded by informing me that he lost his father when he was a baby and that the only dads he knew were coaches,” Carl continued. “He continued to inform me that the coaches really changed the projection of his life and that he wanted to do the same with other children. I was very impressed.”
In addition to training, Demarcus was an Air Force veteran, a beloved member of the community, and a loving father to his three children, ABC News reported. Baker Mayor Darnell Waites addressed the death in a statement to ABC News, saying: “My heart is heavy ever since I learned of Demarcus Dunn’s passing. He was a father, husband, soldier, mentor, friend and veteran officer. Baker Police Officer – A man loved by all. His life dedicated to serving others was a shining example for our community. ”
Visiting hours and a funeral were held for Demarcus on Friday in Baker, according to a Facebook post from the Baker Police Department. Subsequently, the department led a police procession from the funeral to the cemetery, where Demarcus was buried.
