At the time, Larry said, “I felt like the time had come to walk away on a full time limit. This has nothing to do with my welfare or our group. I am 60 years old and I need to do things different from the ball”. He stayed on a warning job with the group. Larry was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1998 and, in 2019, he presented the NBA Lifetime Achievement Award to the Magic.

In addition, Larry was considered in 2021 as one of the 75 best players in history. Since he ventured out from his job at the Indiana front office, Larry has been appreciating retirement.
