Who was Chick Hearn? Francis Dayle “Chick” Hearn was born in Buda, Illinois. He got the nickname from him while playing in a rookie basketball association; Chick’s classmates played a trick on him by giving him a case with a chicken when he thought it contained tennis shoes. He married Marge, whom he met in high school, in August 1940. Chick’s vocation with the Lakers began in March 1961, beginning an extremely difficult legacy that lasted more than 40 years. He was known for his fast and practical yet creative method of transportation that many have come to adore ever since.

Chick’s style and effect were further elucidated by Eddie Doucette, a solo announcer. He said: “Assuming you will grasp the magnificence of the game, you have to be as fast as possible. Also, to do that, you can’t miss the rhythm of the ball. Presumably Chick Hearn is amazing, he has always made you listen to the rhythm of the ball.” Chick’s creative plays gave the game numerous critical terms like a sure thing, triple double, and finger spin that have become part of basketball jargon today.

The terms and expressions that he invented were called Chickisms. Later, Chick’s broadcast partner of 15 years, Stu Lantz, said of him, “When you’re certified, people see it. You cannot travel as a certified stowaway. You can fake it all you want, but you can’t hide it. He could just make you feel so comfortable, plus he was in everyone’s living room, you know? With 82 games, he is in your living room 82 times a year. You just experienced passionate feelings for the person.”

Throughout his vocation with the Lakers, Chick called games for 3,388 consecutive games beginning in November 1965. In addition to reporting NBA games, he served as an analyst for school-level games, boxing, and American football, among others. Chick was also known for making up intriguing factual bits while criticizing him. In addition, his condition with the players separated him from the rest. Enchantment Johnson once said, “When I talked to Chick, a lot of times it wasn’t really about the ball. In general, he was very happy for me. I got little notes from him. How did Chick Hearn die? Chick’s line of continuous games ended when he had a cardiac medical procedure in December 2001 and then a hip fracture in mid-2002. He returned to the telecommunications job in April of that year. However, in August 2002, Chick fell at his home in Encino, California, and injured his head. Despite two medical procedures, he never regained consciousness. On August 5, 2002, Chick died at Northridge Hospital Medical Center in California. He was 85 years old and approaching the commemoration of his 64th wedding to Marge. Chick also became the leading telecaster inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2003.
