A prosecutor on Friday announced the indictment of two suspected gang members on charges related to the shooting death last year of an 8-year-old girl in Atlanta. An attorney for Conley who no longer represents him has previously said that Conley was protesting peacefully and witnessed the shooting, but did not open fire himself. No new lawyers for Conley were listed in online court records. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced the arrest of 23-year-old McKinney last week. No attorney who could comment on the charges was listed in his name in online court records. Willis said the two men were members of the Bloods street gang.
The fast-food restaurant was burned down the day after Brooks’s murder, and people protesting the police brutality camped out at the scene for the next several weeks. Members of the Bloods street gang protesting Brooks’s murder had erected makeshift barricades in the area. Willis said Brooks was also a member of the gang, but attorneys for her family said they were unaware of such an affiliation.
Authorities said gunmen had been blocking roads and turning some drivers away. As the driver of the van in which Secoriea was traveling approached the barricade, armed people began to walk towards the vehicle and indicated that the driver could not pass, according to authorities.
“We allege that Mr. Conley shot the car when he did not stop and did not respect his barricade and that led to the tragic murder of Secoriea Turner,” Willis said.
Willis said both men are charged with occupying the barricade and encouraging the commission of various crimes as part of their involvement in the Bloods, including pointing a firearm at at least two other people in a car on the same day that Secoriea was assassinated.
L. Chris Stewart and Justin Miller, attorneys for the Brooks family, said they “have no knowledge or information of any alleged Rayshard Brooks gang affiliation.” Willis said he has video evidence showing that other people besides Conley and McKinney were involved in Secoriea’s murder, and urged anyone with information to call his office.
