Police were called to the scene around 12:45 p.m. on Friday, as previously reported by CrimeOnline. They found Hargrove on the ground near the east side of the school with multiple gunshot wounds. Saucedo had been detained by a campus police officer. Police said Saturday that the shooting took place during a bullying incident and that Saucedo’s parents told the investigator that the boy took the gun from his father, the Albuquerque Journal said.

On Saturday, Albuquerque police held a press conference announcing more details about the shooting that occurred Friday at Washington Middle School. Authorities say 13-year-old Juan Saucedo was arrested Friday afternoon following the shooting of 13-year-old Bennie Hargrove. Hargrove was taken to the University of New Mexico Hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Police responded to Washington Middle School at 12:40 p.m. in reference to a boy who had been shot. When officers arrived, they located Hargrove on the ground near the east side of the school. Shortly after the shooting, Saucedo was taken into custody by a campus police officer. Through multiple interviews, Saucedo was deemed to be the offender. It was confirmed that the firearm used by Saucedo was brought from home.

He was arrested and charged with an open count of murder and illegal possession of a deadly weapon on school premises. A student witness told detectives that Saucedo showed several children the gun he had in his backpack earlier that day. Saucedo hid the gun behind his leg when Hargrove approached, the witness said. Hargrove wanted Saucedo to “stop bullying his friends,” the witness said, and told Saucedo that he “didn’t want to fight” but rather “just leave his friends alone.”

Saucedo drew the gun and shot Hargrove, hitting him multiple times, the witness said. Police said Saucedo told officers to “tell my mom I’m sorry” and said “I don’t deserve to eat” when they offered her food. Saucedo’s father arrived at the school Friday just in time to see his son handcuffed to his after noticing his gun was missing.
