Juan Martinez, 31, and Nancy Martinez, of Gainesville, were arrested early Monday in the death of Valeria Jordon Garfias, who suffered brain trauma and internal injuries, according to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office. A Georgia couple was accused of killing a 2-year-old girl while babysitting, authorities said.
Investigators said the married couple was caring for the girl Sunday at home while her parents were at work. The girl was rushed to a hospital Sunday afternoon before being airlifted to another facility in Atlanta, where she was pronounced dead. Staff at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Hospital notified investigators due to the nature of Valeria’s injuries, sheriff officials said. The girl’s body has been sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab. An investigation into the incident is underway, authorities said.
Juan and Nancy Martinez were booked into the Hall County Jail after their arrest and charged with first-degree murder and cruelty to children. The couple remains detained without a bond. A spokesperson for the Hall County Sheriff’s Office told the Gainesville Times that the couple was friends or acquaintances of Valeria’s parents.
