Lakeisha Mitchell, a Titusville, Florida resident, allegedly beat and strangled 4-year-old King Joy-Castro to death while filming the assault on camera. Now, the investigation has found that Mitchell previously assaulted two other foster brothers, who were returned to her biological mother after social workers noticed injuries on her bodies.
It is currently being investigated why Mitchell was allowed to be a foster mother to another child despite having a history of abuse. King Joy-Castro’s social worker, Kirsten Larson, made the same point and said: “She said that she was not going to take her and notified the BFP (Brevard Family Association) that she was not going to take her,” Lawson alleged. . Mitchell eventually changed his mind and decided to stay with King-Castro. The boy was reported dead on August 25, 2021, due to a brain hemorrhage from blunt head trauma.
A video found of Mitchell by prosecutors shows her brutally beating the 4-year-old as she says, “I don’t even care. Die. Die, bitch, die.” She has been charged with first degree murder, child abuse aggravated with great bodily harm, neglect of a child, and child abuse.
Speaking to police during questioning, Mitchell insisted that King-Castro had serious behavior problems and that she often spoke with “demons.” Additionally, Mitchell’s attorney has provided a report from a psychological analyst indicating that the minor was unable to feel pain or empathy like other children.
However, the police investigation also unearthed older records of Mitchell’s abusive behavior toward other foster children. The 41-year-old foster mother previously adopted two other children, whom she beat with belts, spatula, shoes or with bare hands. In fact, a report dated April 20, 2021 indicated that one of the foster children was found with a lump on the back of his head that was missing a lock of hair. In addition, the boy had bruises and abrasions on his face and buttocks. Other abuse marks were found on his back and ribs, apparently caused by a rope or cord. Despite clear signs of abuse, Mitchell did not face criminal charges at the time, while the children were immediately returned to her biological mother.
Currently, a bond hearing date for Lakeisha Mitchell’s hearing has been set for December 6, 2021.
