Jessica Ebbighausen, a 19-year-old officer, has been confirmed as the victim of the crash in the town of Rutland. She joined the Rutland Police Department on May 23. Tate Rheaume, 20, reportedly tried to break into a home on East Washington Street.

Friday’s deadly crash that claimed the life of a Rutland City Police Department officer is still under investigation. Jessica Ebbighausen, a 19-year-old officer, has been confirmed as the victim. She joined the Rutland Police Department on May 23 as a part-time Level 2 Certified Officer.

Police officer killed in Rutland crash

Tate Rheaume, 20, reportedly attempted to enter a home on East Washington Street around 2:35 p.m., according to police. Rutland police responded. They claimed that when Rheaume fled the site, an officer followed him.

The pursuit continued from East Washington Street to the intersection with Woodstock Avenue, also known as U.S. Route 4. More police cars also arrived in the area at the same time to offer assistance. Ebbighausen was operating one of the cars while a full-time supervising police officer sat in the back seat.

Rheaume is believed to have crossed the center line into the eastbound lanes during the two-mile pursuit and crashed into Officer Ebbighausen’s vehicle. She also hit a different Rutland police car. No one from the pursuing cruiser was injured in the collision.

Officer Ebbighausen died at the scene. Her body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Burlington for an autopsy while being escorted by the Vermont State Police and the Rutland Police Department.

Rheaume and the other two Rutland police officers sustained injuries in the collision. All three were transported to Rutland Regional Medical Center. The policeman who was traveling with Officer Ebbighausen is currently being treated for her injuries. After receiving treatment, the officer who was operating the second eastbound cruiser was released. Rheaume was transferred to Burlington’s University of Vermont Medical Center. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Officer Ebbighausen had aspired to be a police officer since she was nine years old, according to the Rutland city police chief. At the end of this year, she was scheduled to enroll in the police academy.
