“I don’t want to keep crying. All I want is my son. That’s it,” said Day’s mother, Carmen Bolden Day. It has been almost a month since Bolden Day last saw her son. Day is a graduate student at ISU, who was last seen in Bloomington. Now, his mother continues to beg for each and every resource available to help him find him.
“Not only are they being used, but I need to exhaust all the resources,” Bolden Day said. Day was last seen on August 24. His car was found two days later in Peru, in a wooded area near the YMCA. Now, the Peruvian Police confirm that sometime around September 2, his wallet was also found. This time, he’s on LaSalle, but only a few blocks as the crow flies, east of the car.
And then on September 4, an unidentified body and Peruvian Police now say that an ISU cordon was also found, along the Illinois River. This was south of the other discoveries. “He had a college education and was pursuing a master’s degree to be a doctor,” Bolden Day said. His mother is begging for the identification of that body.
“Do you think I’m not sitting here every day wondering if my baby is that body?” Bolden Day said. The LaSalle County Coroner said he may have identification on Thursday. “They have this unidentified body and we are supposed to sit and wait,” Bolden Day said. And while he waits, Bolden Day said he needs answers.
“I care that he’s missing, I care that she hasn’t heard her voice,” she continued, “I care that she can’t see him.” Day is reported to be a 25-year-old black male who is 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighs 180 pounds. He has short black hair, brown eyes, and some facial hair. Day is known to operate a 2010 white Chrysler 300 (Illinois registration # CH74067), police said.

Day’s abandoned car was found Aug. 26 in a wooded area near the Illinois Valley YMCA in Peru, located about 60 miles north of Bloomington in LaSalle County. “When the officers arrived, a hidden vehicle was located in the wooded area,” Peruvian police said in a statement.
Police say Day disappeared under “unexplained suspicious circumstances.” A major search effort was launched near the site where the vehicle was found and police said the car was subsequently “removed and transported to a secure facility pending further processing.”
“Detectives from Bloomington and Peru are requesting the help of Illinois Valley residents who may have seen the vehicle or Jelani or anyone else operating the vehicle in the area,” police said in a statement.
Speaking at an event to support the search at Illinois State University at Normal, Day’s mother told about 100 people in attendance that she believes her son is alive and that they will find him. She said that Jelani Day is strong and asked the crowd to pray for her strength.
On August 27, the Bloomington Police Department released what was believed to be the “last known photograph/video of Jelani and her clothing from a security camera at ISU’s Bone Student Center,” although they would later be released. additional images.
