Burton was selected by Richmond with the 77th pick in the 1991 Australian Football League (AFL) draft. He did not play an AFL senior game, instead playing for Richmond reserves and Oakleigh Football Club in the Victorian Football Association (VFA). He returned to Subiaco to play in the Western Australian Football League (WAFL) in 1994. At the end of the year he was recruited to be a member of Fremantle’s inaugural team, along with his older brother Matthew. He only played two games for Fremantle, which were when his brother was out of the team. However, he performed well for Subiaco, being selected to represent Western Australia in the interstate match against Queensland and finishing equal ninth in the 1995 Sandover Medal.
