Gloria Nixon-Crouch is a figurative sculpture at the Clay Art Center in Port Chester, New York. She was the second wife of Stanley Crouch, an American poet, music, and cultural critic, columnist, novelist, and biographer, perhaps best known for his jazz criticism and his 2000 novel Don’t the Moon Look Lonesome?

Crouch became a staff writer for The Village Voice in 1979 and was there until 1988. He was published by numerous publications, including Harper’s, The New York Times, and The New Yorker. He was a founder of the Lincoln Jazz Center.

He was the recipient of the MacArthur Genius Grant and named an NEA Jazz Master in 2019. He was an advisor and frequent presence in Ken Burns’ Jazz. He wrote the liner notes for dozens of iconic jazz albums, including releases by Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Don Cherry, Pharoah Sanders, Miles Davis, Wynton Marsalis, and Chick Corea. His books include Notes of a Hanging Judge: Essays and Reviews, 1979-1989, a biography of Charlie Parker called Kansas City Lightning, and the collection Considering Genius: Writings on Jazz. He wrote two novels and multiple plays.

Stanley Crouch married his wife Gloria Nixon on the New Year’s Eve of 1994. Nixon-Crouch met her husband-to-be at a party in Harlem. She recalled in an interview with The Baltimore Sun: “I thought he was charming, absolutely charming. Of course, he was on his very best behavior. I thought he was very smart, very sweet, very attentive. All the things I respond to.” She added that she “more or less shares his view of the world and the culture.” They lived in the West Village in Manhattan until recently, when they moved to Brooklyn.

Stanley Crouch Death

Crouch died at the Calvary Hospital in New York on Wednesday, September 16, 2020, at the age of 74, following nearly a decade of serious health issues. Stanley Crouch’s wife, Gloria Nixon-Crouch, announced the news, according to NPR.

He will be greatly missed.”

Cause of Death

Stanley Crouch’s cause of death was not revealed. He struggled with serious health issues for nearly a decade and contracted COVID-19 in spring 2020.
