Internationally renowned K-pop music composer Don Spike was sentenced to three years in prison suspended after being convicted of drug possession and abuse. On January 9, the Seoul Northern District Court held the artist’s first trial for violating various laws prohibiting the possession and use of psychotropic substances and narcotics, including the Law for Aggravated Punishment for Specific Offenses.
In addition to three years in prison, the 45-year-old musician received five years of probation and eighty hours of drug awareness classes for his rehabilitation. Furthermore, he has been ordered to perform 120 hours of community service and must pay a hefty fine of 40 million won.
According to the court order, Don Spike received a less severe sentence than the five-year term sought by the prosecution. He pleaded guilty to him during an earlier stage of the court process, and his family and others close to him filed multiple petitions. The sentence said:
“The solidarity shown by his family and people close to him has been taken into consideration (in the ruling) as it could prevent recidivism in crimes.”
Don Spike had bought more than 45 million won worth of medicines since 2021
On September 28, 2022, Kim Min-su, better known by his stage name Don Spike, was arrested at a hotel in the Gangnam district of Seoul on charges of violating the Drug Control Law. The artist purchased 45 million won worth of methamphetamine and has reportedly used it recreationally more than fourteen times.
According to the order of the Seoul Northern District Court, Min-su had acquired more than one hundred grams of methamphetamine and had induced several people to use recreational drugs. Explaining the reason for the penalty imposed on the artist, the order read:
“The defendant had purchased more than 100 grams of methamphetamine and induced several people to abuse the drug, which weighs on the seriousness of the crimes.”
Under Korean law, possessing, producing or using narcotics with a street value of at least 5 million won but less than 50 million won carries a minimum jail sentence of three years. For possession of narcotics worth more than 50 million won, the minimum sentence is seven years in prison.
After his arrest by the authorities, Don Spike spoke to the press and revealed that the charges were true. During the court hearing that took place in December, Kim Min-su pleaded guilty to the charges against him.
At the time of his arrest, he was in possession of thirty grams of the drug, enough for more than six hundred uses.
This is the third time Spike has been charged with drug abuse. In 2010, he received a punishment of 5 million won for his continued misuse of cannabis.
Don Spike is a popular musician credited with composing and arranging several K-pop songs for various artists. Notable musicians to have worked with Spike include sensational K-pop boy band EXO. In addition to his work in the entertainment industry, Spike also owned a barbecue joint known as Low & Slow.
Don Spike is reportedly currently incarcerated at the Seoul Dongbu Detention Center.
