Diane Cilento Wiki – Diane Cilento Biography

Diane Cilento was the first wife of James Bond actor Sean Connery. She was an Australian actress and author. She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the 1963 film Tom Jones.

After graduation, Cilento found work on stage almost immediately and was signed to a five-year contract by Sir Alexander Korda. Her first leading role in a film was in the British film Passage Home (1955), opposite fellow Australian Peter Finch.

She soon secured roles in British films and worked steadily until the end of the decade. In 1956, she was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Supporting or Featured Actress (Dramatic) for Helen of Troy in Jean Giraudoux’s Tiger at the Gates.

She was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Tom Jones in 1963 and appeared in The Third Secret the following year. However, she allowed her film career to decline following her marriage to actor Sean Connery, the second of her three husbands and to whom she was married from 1962 to 1973. They had one son, the actor Jason Connery. She had previously had a daughter, Giovanna, with her first husband.

In Connery’s James Bond film You Only Live Twice, she doubled for her husband’s co-star Mie Hama in a diving scene because Hama was indisposed.

She starred with Charlton Heston in the 1965 film The Agony and the Ecstasy, and with Paul Newman in the 1967 western film Hombre.

In 1985, Cilento married playwright Anthony Shaffer, who wrote the script of The Wicker Man; she met him when she appeared in that film as Miss Rose in 1973, and he joined her when she returned to Queensland in 1975.

Cilento continued working as an actress, in films and television. In the 1980s, she settled in Mossman, north of Cairns, where she built her own outdoor theatre, named “Karnak”, in the tropical rainforest. The venture allowed her to participate in experimental drama. In 2001, she was awarded the Centenary Medal for “distinguished service to the arts, especially theatre”.

In 2006, Cilento released her autobiography, My Nine Lives.

In 2007 Cilento signed with agent Bronwen Gault Management in Sydney, and started preparations for a one-woman theatrical tour of Australia based on the life of Peggy Guggenheim. Gault arranged one of Cilento’s last photographic sessions. The tour never took place.

Following their divorce the two were on rocky terms, even decades after their marriage ended, as reported by the Evening Standard.

Cilento grew up in a wealthy household as her parents, Sir Raphael and Lady Phyllis Cilento, were both physicians, according to The Guardian.

Connery and Cilento had one child together, a son named Jason. He was born on January 11, 1963. Jason followed in the footsteps of his parents as an actor and director.

Jason Connery actually portrayed James Bond creator Ian Fleming in a TV drama called Spymaker: The Secret Life of Ian Fleming.

In 2008, Connery responded to claims from Cilento that he was snubbing their son in his will. Connery told the Evening Standard, “I haven’t seen the woman in 37 years and she knows nothing about me or my life now. Diane can’t move on from the break-up of our marriage and I have already had to contend with her accusations about me being violent towards her. Now the lies seem to be getting even more vicious and, what is worse, she is dragging our son into it.”

Jason Connery was married to actress Mia Sara from 1996 to 2002 and the couple had a son together named Dashiell Quinn Connery a year after tying the knot. Most know Mia Sara from her role as Ferris Bueller’s girlfriend Sloane Peterson in the movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. The actress is now married to Brian Henson, the son of famous puppeteer Jim Henson.

When Cilento married Connery, she already had a daughter, Giovanna, from her previous marriage to Andrea Volpe. She and Volpe were married from 1956 to 1960.

The Guardian reported that Volpe was an Italian aristocrat. He was one of Cilento’s three husbands.

Cilento went on to marry Connery following her marriage to Volpe.
