Two days before Christmas, Connie Dabate was shot twice inside her Ellington home

On December 23, 2015, Connie Dabate, 39, a mother of two young children, was found shot in the basement of her home in Ellington, Connecticut. She was shot twice with a .357 magnum, once in the back of her head. Her husband, Richard, was reportedly present inside the home when the incident occurred.

Richard Dabate was discovered on the kitchen floor with one arm and leg tied to a folding chair with zip ties and superficial knife wounds. He told authorities that a masked man dressed in camouflage broke into the couple’s Ellington home, murdered his wife and tied him to a chair, and that he only saved himself from death by burning his attacker.

Connie Dabate’s husband told authorities that he left their two young children at the bus stop, went to his house to get a “work shirt” and then left for work around 8:30 a.m. Richard informed officers that his wife was still at home preparing for a YMCA exercise class. Data from her Fitbit indicated that she left for her class at around 8:46 am.

He also mentioned that when he returned to her house around 9 a.m. Picking up her laptop, he noticed a masked man, around 6-foot-2, dressed in full camouflage and wearing gloves. He said the intruder “roughed” him and attacked him with a torch. The intruder then tied him to a chair and stabbed him with a razor.

Richard claimed that the intruder went down to the basement and chased after Connie after she returned home. He allegedly stumbled down the stairs, running after them when she heard a shot. The intruder also tried to point the gun at him, but he “wrestled” with him, burning his face in the process. The man then fled the scene, after which the husband called 911.
