Biography
Colin Baker , born June 8, 1943 in London, is an English actor.
Childhood
He grew up in London with his mother while his father completed his military service. After the war, the family moved to Rochdale, although Colin continued to study in Manchester. He made his first acting appearance as a teenager, in the 1954 series My Wife’s Sister . He then studied at St. Bede’s College, where he appeared in annual opera productions. He appeared in Yeoman of the Guard and Iolanthe.
Career
He then began studying law, but as time went by, he found himself less and less attracted to this work. Colin then decided to become a full-time actor and entered the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art at the age of 23.
From 1970, he began appearing on television: his first major role was that of Claude, in the series Roads to Freedom , a BBC adaptation of The Roads to Freedom. The following year, he played Cousin Bette before appearing in the mini-series War & Peace . He also became fairly well known for his role as the villainous Paul Merroney, in the series The Brothers from 1974 to 1976.
In 1983 , Colin Baker made his Doctor Who debut in the three-part series Arc of Infinity , playing the arrogant Commander Maxil. He was then noticed by the show’s producer, John Nathan-Turner. After Peter Davison’s departure, Baker was approached to replace him; he was surprised, thinking that having played a secondary role in the show would close the door on him.
The Doctor’s first appearance took place at the end of the episode ” The Caves of Androzani .” Baker played his first full episode the following week in “The Twin Dilemma.” However, the series went on hiatus for nearly 14 months, imposed by BBC director Grade, who deemed the show too violent and wanted to revamp the storylines. Doctor Who returned for its twenty-third series with a season-long episode titled ” The Trial of a Time Lord ,” reflecting the “trial” the series was undergoing.
But the season failed, and Grade demanded his dismissal. Negotiations soured, and Colin was never called back to film his regeneration scene with Sylvester McCoy, forcing him to play himself in a blond wig at the beginning of Time and the Rani . Baker resented his dismissal, believing he could have stayed on for many more years. Despite this, he did not turn his back on the show, and in 1989 took part in the stage play Doctor Who – The Ultimate Adventure, replacing Jon Pertwee, who had fallen ill. He also wrote a short story based on the series, The Deal , as well as comic strip scripts published in Doctor Who Magazine. In 1993, he briefly reprised the role, alongside the other incarnations of the Doctor, in the special episode dedicated to the twentieth anniversary of the series, Dimensions In Time.
In 1997, Colin returned to a starring role in the third series of The Knock, in which he played Donald Dewhurst. He continued to make television appearances, reprising his role as the Doctor again in the 2002 miniseries Doctor Who: Real Time , and the following year in an episode of Children in Need. In 1999, he began appearing in audio productions based on the series. On 4 September 2011, he accepted the presidency of the Doctor Who Appreciation Society.
He has also appeared in Doctors several times. Alongside several other actors, he played himself in the 2013 television film The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot , for the series’ fiftieth anniversary. In 2015, he played Charles Dickens in the film A Christmas Carol.
In 2022, he appeared in the final episode of Doctor Who season 13 , The Power of the Doctor , which celebrated the BBC’s centenary.
