Cesar Iban Torres from California is charged with intentionally causing a wrong-way accident on Highway 101 earlier this month, leaving his girlfriend dead and their four children injured. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said Cesar Iban Torres has been charged with one count of murder in the death of 26-year-old Aimee Garcia and four counts each of attempted murder and child abuse. ABC7 reported. He also faces assault charges and resisting arrest and is expected to be arraigned Tuesday.

Zavala said he tried unsuccessfully to find the family and later learned of the accident. Police say Torres drove his truck with Garcia and his children, all under the age of 9, the wrong way on the freeway and crashed into a trailer truck around 7 p.m. Rescuers tried to get Garcia out of the vehicle, but it was declared dead. The children were taken to UCLA’s Ronald Reagan Hospital for treatment.
Torres attempted to flee the scene and later fought with officers trying to stop him. California Highway Patrol officers molested him and tied him up on the highway. He was arrested and later taken to a hospital to receive treatment for his injuries. Zavala said one of his nephews in the vehicle told him that Garcia and Torres were fighting for control of the steering wheel before the accident. “He said, ‘Mommy saved us,’ and that broke my heart,” Zavala said.
