Brendan Coyle , born December 2, 1962 in Corby, Northamptonshire, is a British and Irish actor and producer.

Childhood

David Brendan Coyle is the son of Irishman Patrick Coyle and Scottishwoman Delia Coyle. He has an older brother named Shaun. He is also the great-nephew of football manager Sir Matt Busby.

First, he studied at the Dublin Drama School, a school co-founded by his aunt Mary-Elizabeth Burke Kennedy, then in 1983, he received a scholarship that allowed him to go to London to attend the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, from which he graduated.

Career

His artistic career began in television with the film London Calling in 1990, in which he played the lead role.
In 1992, he appeared in an episode of The Bill and in a television film. That same year, he began acting in the London theatre in Brian Fiel’s play Philadelphia, Here I Come.

Two years later, he played the lead role in a film drama, Ailsa , and then, while continuing to perform on London stage, he made numerous appearances in British series.

In 1995, he landed a recurring role in the series Thief Takers and then appeared in three films, including a James Bond episode, Tomorrow Never Dies, alongside Pierce Brosnan. John Boorman called on him in a police film, The General, in which he reunited with Jon Voight .

In 1999, he made his Broadway debut in Irish playwright Connor McPherson’s play, The Weir ; for his outstanding performance, he received several awards, including a Laurence Olivier Award.

His career continued both on television and in cinema, where he played increasingly important roles, and in the theater.

In 2001, Brendan appeared in the TV movie Conspiracy and then he landed a recurring role in the series Rockface in 2002. In 2007, he landed a lead role in the British series True Dare Kiss and then appeared in North & South for the BBC; the following year, he played Robert Timmins in the series Lark Rise to Candleford.

In 2010, he landed the recurring role of John Bates in the series Downton Abbey , playing this character for six years, which brought him recognition from the general public and earned him nominations for the Prime Emmy Awards and the BAFTAs.

After working almost exclusively in England and Ireland, he began to participate in international productions, notably American ones but also in the French series Spotless.

In 2016, he had a small role in the film Me Before You alongside Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin , he also made his first films as an executive producer.

In 2018, he landed a recurring role in the BBC/Netflix co-produced series Requiem and played the Earl of Lennox in the historical drama Mary Suart, Queen of Scots. That same year, he reprised his role as John Bates in the first film of the hit series Downton Abbey .
In spring 2022, he returned to the role alongside the original cast in Downton Abbey: A New Area and appeared in all six episodes of the miniseries Riches .
He will soon be seen alongside Robert Carlyle in the miniseries Toxic Town .

Brendan Coyle lives alone between London and a small seaside resort in Norfolk, Heacham.

As a child, he dreamed of a professional career as a footballer, he remained passionate about the sport and supports Manchester United FC.
