A Louisiana man, who accused a Tesla driver of backing up to him at a busy gas station and fleeing the scene, has now been charged with making a false report after the smart vehicle recorded him faking the incident.
The Slidell Police Department responded to a call around 4 p.m. on Friday, September 3, regarding a man who had been injured in an alleged hit-and-run. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found Arthur Bates Jr., 47, who told them that a Tesla driver had struck him in a gas station parking lot, Fox News reported.

“Bates complained of injuries to his back, legs and neck, which resulted in the dispatch of an ambulance and a fire truck to the scene,” the Slidell Police Department said in a statement. “Unbeknownst to Bates, Tesla records all camera images of him,” the department continued. “When Slidell police officers reviewed the video footage of the Tesla, it became clear that Bates was lying and staged the entire event.”
Authorities released video footage of the incident. The clip showed Bates walking across the parking lot from the bombs at a considerable distance from the Tesla. However, he then walks over and stops right next to the vehicle’s left rear fender. The Tesla begins to back up and comes to a stop before Bates climbs onto the rear bumper and falls, later pretending to be in pain. The driver then enters camera view, removes Bates’ foot from the bumper, and drives away from the scene.

Internally, the machine will have multi-camera video, Tesla’s full autonomous driving computer, force feedback sensor and a screen for “useful information” where the face will be.
