Netflix’s ‘Inventing Anna’ is a riveting drama mini-series that follows a young woman as she makes her way into New York high society by claiming to be a well-to-do German beneficiary. Vivian, a columnist trying to uncover Anna’s past, doggedly tries to learn about the socialite’s source of riches, only to get a multitude of baffling reactions. Other than referencing her father a couple of times, for the most part regarding her financial status at the time, the nominal person remains dubiously silent regarding her family.
In fact, even when the show closes, relatively little is discovered about Anna’s family, but they are eventually found by Vivian. Considering that several characters in ‘Creating Anna’ come from genuine people, we chose to see what we could find about the genuine people of Anna Sorokin. This is what we discovered.
Who are the parents of Anna Sorokin? Anna Sorokin was born in a Moscow suburb called Domodedovo in 1991. When she was 16 years old, she moved to the German city of Eschweiler with her parents and her younger brother. Her father, Vadim, apparently started working as a transporter for the NKS transport organization and was later elevated to leader. After the organization went into debt in 2013, she then, at the time, started a heating and cooling business.
In a meeting, her father discovered that the family supported Anna after she graduated from high school, paying for her convenience and other requirements, apparently without much investigation. In a meeting she gave from prison, Anna also expressed that her parents generally trusted her and had high standards for her. Interestingly, both Vadim and her better half have no experience with the surname (“Delvey”) that Anna took while she claimed it was motivated by her mother’s birth name. Obviously, they also hadn’t known anything about the $60 million trust store that Anna secured her privilege to during her days of luxury and comfort in New York.
While Anna anticipated the conviction in 2019, her father was reported to have claimed that the family had abandoned Anna. He admitted that he did not have any information about her daughter’s life in the US before she was treated and said that it was up to her to deal with her circumstance. He also stated that the family had never benefited from Anna’s fake exercises and that she had actually made money from them.
Where could Anna Sorokin’s parents be now? Anna Sorokin’s family has generally remained out of the spotlight even as her little girl has gone from New York City socialite to accused criminal. They apparently moved to the German town of Düren, near Cologne, after Anna moved to Paris. From her response to the whole issue, it seems that Vadim Sorokin and her better half really like to stay out of touch with the girl’s pranks and her resulting reputation.
The humble community they call home feels like the perfect reverse of the “Soho Grifter’s” favorite sparkling metropolitan hangouts. It’s quite significant that the show also momentarily portrays Anna’s family, including a person named Vadim. In this way, as on screen, after all, Anna Sorokin’s family remains basically unconnected to the case of her child and seems to like to keep it that way.
