The suspect began to walk away from them as they tried to defuse the situation. An officer shot the suspect as he attempted to enter a residential building despite repeated requests from officers for him to drop the firearm.
Police say the offender then stabbed another individual in the upper torso near Second Street. With non-life-threatening injuries, the suspect and one of the stabbed men were taken to a hospital.

Responding officers told Najara to drop the screwdriver, but he refused to comply, Pennino said. He then entered a yard using a gate, allegedly tried to enter a house while he was still armed, and was shot once in the upper torso by police.
Najara was taken to a hospital with injuries that were described as not being life-threatening and she underwent surgery Tuesday afternoon. Four victims were treated at the scene, while one was transported to a trauma center with injuries that were also not described as life-threatening, Long Beach fire officials said. The boy who fell suffered minor injuries.
“I saw him come out of the park,” Blankenship said. “Everyone kept their distance and kept an eye on him. I saw him walking south to 2nd Street. I heard a couple of shots shortly after that.”
Pennino said the attacks were unprovoked and “came out of nowhere.” Authorities said the motive behind the rampage remains unknown. The weapon was found at the scene. Neighbors in the area remain in shock, and some are concerned about the increase in crime in the community.
“My daughter, when she was younger, used to play in this park,” said Brad Goshert, a local resident. “It’s a safe area, it’s a safe park, but you know, things happen everywhere.” Aerial video from Sky5 showed police walking around a three-block radius. Detectives were also combing the park for additional evidence.
Najara, who is also homeless, was arrested on charges of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and robbery. He is being held on $1 million bail.
