The second episode of The Sandman Season 1 serves as a transition between the preface and the beginning of Morpheus’ journey because the first episode of The Sandman Season 1 lays out the story for the rest of the season. Imperfect Hosts, the second episode, which was based on The Sandman #2, introduced new characters and established their storylines for the season.
Dream eventually returned to the Dreaming, where he met Lucienne (Vivienne Acheampong), who was waiting for him. He lacked the power to repair her domain, which was in ruins, lest she discover his tools.
Other characters introduced in this episode included the fictional portrayals of biblical brothers Cain (Sanjeev Bhaskar) and Abel (Asim Chaudhary), the hundred-plus-year-old Ethel Cripps (Joely Richardson) and her institutionalized son John (David Thewlis), as well such as the Fates (Nina Wadia, Souad Faress and Dinita Gohil), or the

Morpheus needed to call the Fates to help him locate his tools because he was helpless without them. The three goddesses, however, never gave a clear answer, as Lucienne had warned, and summoning them proved to be a costly endeavor.
Morpheus realized that he could regain some of his abilities using a creation he had made in a dream. The epiphany led him to the dreamlike interpretation of Cain and Abel, the dysfunctional brothers who had been given a pet gargoyle named Gregory by Morpheus, the first murderer and the first victim. Their relationship offered light-hearted comic relief to the play’s drama.
By transforming Gregory into sand, Morpheus regained some of his power and gathered the gifts needed to summon the Fates. The three women answered his questions about her three tools, but the ambiguous answers made Dream’s journey even longer. However, when she was informed that Johanna Constantine was with her sandbag, she knew where to start.
The second episode of Sandman included a different story that was initially unrelated to Morpheus. Ethel Cripps, who was Roderick Burgess’ mistress in the first episode, was now over a century old and a well-known art dealer in New York.
She had been hiding the fact that she had traded Dream’s weapons for the Amulet of Protection, which had kept her alive. Even when Corinthian tried to force her to reveal the location of the ruby her son John had stolen, she used it to fend her off and send him back to the Dreaming.
After that, viewers were sent to a mental health facility where Ethel had her son admitted after he stole the ruby from her. The son of Ethel and Roderick Burgess is played by the legendary David Thewlis.
The Sandman Season 1 episode 2 is toned down compared to the first episode
When it comes to production costs, the Netflix adaptation has made no compromises. Each episode captures viewers’ attention with its stunning presentation, from the building to the graphics. Unlike the previous episode, where Tom Sturridge had almost no dialogue, this one gave viewers their first chance to hear Morpheus speak, in a gruff, brooding voice that was ideal for his dark role.
The 37-minute episode, which was the shortest of The Sandman season 1, established the turning points in Morpheus’ journey. The plot felt a bit confusing, with many of the plot points seeming unclear, especially to those unfamiliar with the comics, and it lacked the magnetism of the first episode.
However, there will be no instant gratification when it comes to explanations of the various enigmatic aspects of the series, as is apparent from the adaptation. If the show continues, some questions may not be resolved until the second or third season.
On August 5, 2022, The Sandman Season 1 made its debut on Netflix. All episodes can currently be streamed.
