Yarianna Wheeler was found by a fisherman shortly after 3 p.m. on Aug. 15 about three miles southeast of Waukegan Harbor, north of Chicago. the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said. The Coast Guard recovered the body, which was dubbed “Lake Michigan Jane Doe” as investigators tried to determine who it was.

Although the official cause of death is still pending, the sheriff’s office said an autopsy revealed “multiple cutting force injuries to his body.” The sheriff’s office said Wheeler had been living in Chicago recently but was originally from Bellwood, a western suburb of Chicago.

The body of a 19-year-old pregnant woman found in Lake Michigan had been stabbed multiple times, authorities said Saturday. Wheeler, who was six months pregnant, was originally from Bellwood, Indiana, the office said in a statement. An autopsy revealed that she had multiple cutting force injuries to her body, authorities said, but an official cause of death is pending. Her death is being investigated as a homicide.

Wheeler was identified by the Lake County Coroner’s Office Forensic Dentist using dental records. Authorities say she may have entered the water “anywhere from the northern shore of Indiana to the northern Illinois shore of Lake Michigan.”

Hours after Wheeler’s body was discovered, a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter also found the body of a man, identified as Martin Mendoza, 49, of Waukesha, Wisconsin, however, authorities say. that Mendoza drowned in the port of 63rd Street in Chicago and the incidents are unrelated.
