Ron Popeil, the quintessential television host and inventor, known to generations of viewers for selling products, including Veg-O-Matic, Pocket Fisherman, Mr. Microphone and Showtime Rotisserie and BBQ, has died, his family said.
He died “suddenly and peacefully” Wednesday at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, his family said. He was 86 years old. No cause of death was given.

According to a statement provided to CNN by Popeil’s representative Eric Ortner, infomercial king Ron Popeil died “suddenly and peacefully” Wednesday at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He was 86 years old.
Popeil “lived his life to the fullest and passed into the loving arms of his family,” said a statement from his spokesman.
No cause of death was provided.
Career
Popeil first appeared on television in 1959 in an infomercial for Chop-o-Matic. His company, Ronco, founded by his father, eventually produced Hair in a Can and Pocket Fisherman.
But Ronco’s Showtime Rotisserie & BBQ, and Popeil’s ubiquitous late-night infomercials, helped inscribe the phrase “set it up and forget it” in the American lexicon.
In an infomercial, Popeil introduces his automatic pasta maker with his trademark zest:
Popeil promised consumers they could make “thousands and thousands” of types of pasta with his machine “in less than three minutes.”
His company also produced the Rhinestone Stud Setter, now known as the Bedazzler, and the Mr. Microphone karaoke machine, Smokeless Ashtray, and Inside-the-Eggshell Egg Scrambler.
Wife and children
Popeil is survived by his wife of 25 years, Robin; his daughters Kathryn, Lauren Contessa and Valentina; and four grandchildren. A fifth daughter, Shannon, died before him.
