Atlanta police officers received praise from their superiors after they saved a suspect from being hit by a train. Authorities said the suspect was spared after he rammed a police car into train tracks after robbing it during a routine stop.
ABC News obtained video that captured the gruesome moment the suspect escaped a rushing train toward the overturned police vehicle on the tracks. The intense moment was captured by an aerial camera on the Atlanta Police Department helicopter and the body cameras of the officers on the scene.
The suspect’s joyride in a stolen police car nearly came to an end when he overturned the vehicle on the train tracks. Police officers who pursued the suspect in the stolen police car saved his life by pulling him out of the overturned vehicle seconds before a train hurtled down the tracks, crashing into the car.
Atlanta police officer’s car was stolen during a traffic stop
Authorities said an Atlanta police officer was dealing with a driver at a traffic stop when a suspect identified as 29-year-old Mickal Parker stole his squad car.
According to Fox News, Atlanta Sgt. Chaffee said that after the car was stolen, the officer immediately took the radio from him and began updating patrol officers in the area to search for the suspect in the stolen police car.
Shortly thereafter, several officers joined the search, including a Police Department helicopter, which tracked the suspect in the stolen patrol vehicle before it hit the train tracks at McDonough Boulevard and overturned.
Soon after, officers can be heard on the video yelling, “Train!” several times before running to the overturned car and dragging the suspect to safety. Moments later, a train is seen ramming the vehicle into the tracks. Addressing the officers’ quick response to him, Atlanta Sgt. chaffee said:
“They immediately went into rescue mode, where they got this guy out of the car and away from the train.”
Fox News reported that the suspect, who suffered minor injuries, was taken into custody at the scene and taken to the Fulton County Jail, where he faces multiple charges, including robbery for theft, hit-and-run, reckless driving, obstruction and damage to property of the town. .
Chaffee praised the quick actions of the officers. In a statement, he said:
“We are very proud of the actions of the officers. This could have gone a number of different ways. It could have ended with this person seriously injured by this train, it didn’t look like he could make it.” go out on your own.”
Authorities said no officers were injured during the incident.
