In August 2008, the California Court of Appeal ruled for Yeager, finding that his daughter Susan had breached her duty as trustee. Hundreds of thousands of dollars had been illegally removed from his accounts.

Yeager was married to his first wife from 1945 until her death in 1990. He named his plane after his wife Glennis as a good-luck charm; “You’re my good-luck charm, hon. Any airplane I name after you always brings me home.”

Yeager and Glennis moved to Grass Valley, California, after his retirement from the Air Force in 1975. Yeager lived in Northern California and died on the evening of December 7, 2020, at age 97, in a Los Angeles hospital. His second wife, Victoria, confirmed to CNN Monday night that Yeager had passed after she tweeted from Yeager’s verified Twitter account that the World War II flying ace had died.

“An incredible life well lived, America’s greatest pilot,” she tweeted.

Tributes have poured in for Yeager, led by Nasa administrator, Jim Bridenstine, who called his death a “tremendous loss” for Americans.

“Today’s passing of Gen Chuck Yeager is a tremendous loss to our nation,” Bridenstine said in a statement. “Gen Yeager’s pioneering and innovative spirit advanced America’s abilities in the sky and set our nation’s dreams soaring into the jet age and the space age. He said, ‘You don’t concentrate on risks. You concentrate on results. No risk is too great to prevent the necessary job from getting done.’”
