He co-starred as Banner-Kuppan (Bannerji) in the 2009 Tamil-language activity satire film Aadhavan, inaccurately based on the 1990 Malayalam film His Highness Abdullah. For this work, Vadivelu received a Filmfare Award for “Best Supporting Actor – Tamil” and a Vijay Award for “Best Comedian”.

He co-starred as Style Pandi in the 2010 Tamil-language activity parody film Nagaram Marupakkam (also called Nagaram), a job that earned him a Vijay Award for “Best Comedian”.

His nickname “Vaigai Puyal” was spawned by the media and is a reference to the waterway that runs through his old Madurai neighborhood.

Vadivelu appeared as Ammavasai in the 2011 Tamil-language light-hearted comedy film Kaavalan, a change from the Malayalam-language film Bodyguard. This exposure earned him selection for a Vijay Award as well as a SIIMA Award in the “Best Comedian” ranking.

He has been typecast because many of his on-screen characters include heavy use of jokes and puns.

In 2018, the Tamil Film Producers Council boycotted the screening of Vadivelu in subsequent films.

Vadivelu reported his recovery on Twitter in 2020, saying, “They’ve also been asking me why I’m not acting yet. Soon, I will make my entrance in a big way.”
