Toots Hibbert (born Frederick Nathaniel Hibbert) is a Jamaican singer and songwriter. He is best known as the leader for the reggae and ska band Toots & the Maytals. As lead singer for Toots and the Maytals, Hibbert is known for classic songs such as “Pressure Drop,” “54-46 Is My Number” and “Monkey Man.”

Toots and the Maytals released their first album in a decade, Got to Be Tough, on 28 August 2020. The record, co-produced by drummer Zak Starkey, includes Starkey’s dad, Ringo Starr, and Ziggy Marley collaborating on a cover of Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds,” as well as contributions from Meters drummer Cyril Neville and Jamaican drummer/producer Sly Dunbar.

He is a three-time winner of the Jamaica Festival Song competition. Toots and the Maytals won the Grammy award for best reggae album in 2005 and he was awarded an Order of Distinction from the Jamaican government in 2012.

Toots Hibbert is recuperating after being admitted to the intensive care unit at a private hospital in St. Andrew following complaints of breathing difficulties.

His manager, Caleb Stephenson, told Jamaica’s Gleaner newspaper: “We took him to a private facility where they administered some tests but said based on what is happening. They have to do the COVID-19 test for everything to be complete and to rule it out.”

“While reports of Mr. Hibbert being in an intensive care unit at a private facility in the Corporate Area are true, the family would like to assure those concerned that he is making positive progress and is receiving the best possible treatment, while he awaits the results on his COVID-19 test. He is resting and in good spirits, and is showing signs of improvement by the hour.

“His family has asked everyone to hold him in their prayers, and would like to thank the Minister of Culture Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange and Minister of Health Christopher Tufton for their assistance in getting Mr. Hibbert tested, as well as the countless medical professionals who are taking care of Mr. Hibbert around the clock during this time.”

Toots Hibbert Death

Toots Hibbert died in Kingston, Jamaica on Friday 11 September 2020, at the age of 77. His death was confirmed in a statement on the official Facebook of the Toots and the Maytals. The statement read: “It is with the heaviest of hearts to announce that Frederick Nathaniel “Toots” Hibbert passed away peacefully tonight, surrounded by his family at the University Hospital of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica.

“The family and his management team would like to thank the medical teams and professionals for their care and diligence, and ask that you respect their privacy during their time of grief. Mr. Hibbert is survived by his wife of 39 years, Miss D, and his seven of eight children.”

Cause of Death

Toots Hibbert’s cause of death was not revealed. However, the Toots and the Maytals Facebook page confirmed on Aug. 31 that Hibbert was tested for coronavirus in the last two weeks and placed in intensive care.


Toots is married to his wife Doreen.
