He also played for other teams of the school, including basketball, tennis, and gold.
After matriculating in 1998, he enrolled at Eastern Illinois University, where he played for the NCAA Division I-AA Eastern Illinois Panthers Football Team. During his second year, he ranked second in the entire division for passing efficiency and started earning honors, then in the following year, he led the division in passing efficiency, and became the first Ohio Valley Conference and Eastern Illinois player to win the Walter Payton Award, which is given to the top Division I-AA football player.
NFL Beginnings
Despite his college success, Romo was not invited to the 2003 NFL Combine but was later invited as an extra quarterback which led him to be noticed by scouts. He joined the 2003 NFL Draft but was undrafted though he was assured that the Dallas Cowboys was interested in him, so after the draft, he was signed by the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent. He didn’t play much during his rookie season due to other choices in the position, then mainly as the holder for placekicks, though was able to set an early career highlight, rushing for a winning touchdown in a pre-season game against the Oakland Raiders.
In 2005, he became the team’s second quarterback, a backup to starter Drew Bledsoe. He still played very little, but in the following year was given his opportunity to start for the team, and won his first game as a starter against the Carolina Panthers. This marked the start of numerous wins for the team, helping the Cowboys clinch a play-off spot. However, they lost against the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Wild Card play-off game.
Later NFL Career
Tony’s career blossomed over the next few years as he made his first touchdown rush of his career in 2007, and after continued success, he was offered a $67.5 million contract extension with the Cowboys, which reached the playoffs once more before losing to the eventual Super Bowl XLI champions, the New York Giants. He finished the 2009 season as the first quarterback in team history to take every snap for an entire season. The team became the NFC East division champions, and got to the NFC Division Round before being eliminated.
During the latter part of his career, he played consistently well and was ranked among the best quarterbacks in the league. In 2013, he was signed to a six year extension worth $108 million, securing the rest of his career with the team, and he would complete the next four seasons before announcing his retirement H, being released by the team per his request, and soon after transitioning to broadcasting. He quickly became accepted thanks to his experience as a player, and with his ability to predict offensive plays, and read defensive formations. He continues to work with CBS Sports as a lead color analyst.
