TN govt on alert over smuggling of ration rice to Kerala

Chennai, September 12 (IANS) Tamil Nadu police are on full alert for rice piracy proportional to Kerala. An extraordinary group from the Madurai Civil Supply Detachment (CD) Crime Squad unit seized 15 tons of PDS rice on Sunday while Kerala was being pirated.

The truck carrying the rice was jammed by the DC unit at the Koppalur Coastal Court and 300 packs of rice from the Public Circulation System (PDS) were illicitly moved to Kerala. Each package weighed 50 kg.

Civil Supply Division authorities said that the rice provided for free in the state is being procured by brokers who choose specialists from across the state and illicitly transport it to Kerala.

A senior official from the Tamil Nadu common supply branch informed IANS that in Kerala rice is offered to rice mills at a higher cost. The Tamil Nadu Civil Supply Branch has deputized some aircrews to try and prevent piracy of rice in the neighboring state as it was meant to be used by Tamil Nadu proportion card holders.

Nagercoil, Theni and Walayar regions are the most defenseless checkpoints on the TN-Kerala line.

Sources from the Civilian Supply department told IANS that the office has proactively informed the police that it is essential for joint hunting activity to prevent piracy of the state’s rice.

As reported by the Department of Civil Supplies, the rice that is delivered to delivery shops in Tamil Nadu is much better than the one that was being made by coordinated groups to take it to the neighboring state.

During the new Onam celebrations, rice was distributed in large quantities to Kerala.

In Kerala, a coordinated organization was working that brings rice to rice processes safely. Recently, in the Walayar region of Kerala, two CPI-M pioneers from the neighborhood were caught by the Kerala police for aiding and abetting rice piracy.
