Watson made his VFL debut in 1977 for Essendon at fifteen years and 305 days, the fourth-youngest player in the Association’s entire existence. Tim Watson won Essendon’s Best and Most Attractive honor multiple times (1980, 1985, 1988 and 1989). In 1989, he won the AFL Players Affiliation MVP Grant, now known as the Leigh Matthews Award.
He played the ruck bum in Essendon’s last thousand wins in 1984 and 1985. Tim Watson was appointed commander in 1989 and held firm in that position until 1991, before resigning from the game due to the injury problems that had plagued the last part of his career. In the 1992 preseason draft, Watson was drafted by the West Coast Hawks despite the fact that he had signaled his intention to resign. He never played a game for the club, but went on to do critical work with Organization Seven in 1992, which he recalled working as a boundary runner for that year’s last fabulous game that the Birds won.
Tim Watson was forced out of retirement midway through the 1993 season by Essendon’s mentor Kevin Sheedy. Although Watson was generally not as fit as he had been before and was never able to regain his excellent condition, he assumed a fundamental part in the forward line, kicking some significant goals over time. His involvement in what was an extremely young group was instrumental in helping Essendon gain surprising popularity that year. After the 1994 season, Watson resigned for good, having made 307 appearances and kicked 335 goals. Since his retirement, Watson has been named the sixth most outstanding player to ever play for Essendon in the “Heroes of Essendon” list, and was named a ruck wanderer in their “Hundred Years Group”.
Tim Watson became a senior mentor for St Kilda Football Club, when he replaced Stan Many Alves, who was sacked towards the end of the 1998 season. Watson was then the senior mentor for St Kilda Football Club in the 1999 season and the season 2000. His prosperity was restrained, with the team winning just 12 of the 44 coordinates they played while he was in control to a tie and losing 31 games overall, bringing a win rate to 27 percent.
In the 1999 season, St Kilda completed 10th on the bench with ten wins and twelve misfortunes. In the 2000 season, St Kilda dominated just two matches all season with one draw and nineteen misadventures, where he completed sixteenth (keep going on stool) for the wooden spoon and Watson resigned midway through the 2000 season, where he would leave the role at the end of the season, giving up the final year of his three-year contract. Watson was then succeeded by Malcolm Scourge as St Kilda Football Club’s main mentor.
In much the same way as previous players, Watson has become a media figure, acting as game moderator at Seven News in Melbourne, as well as having unique commentary work on Sevens’ inclusion in the AFL. Tim Watson also appeared on numerous football-related shows on Network, as a game writer for The Age newspaper, and from 2004 to 2013, co-starred on Morning Greatness with Andrew Maher, on the radio broadcast of Melbourne 1116 SEN.
Tim Watson left 1116 SEN in November 2013 to invest more energy in the Seven Organization. It was later reported that he would replace Sandy Roberts as weekday sports moderator at Seven News in Melbourne. In 2015, Watson returned to the morning shift at 1116 SEN.
Tim Watson is still hooked on his better half Susie Watson. His partner is a confidential person and they have three children together. Be that as it may, in 1993 Tim was named ‘Victorian Dad of the Year’. In the 2002 Public Draft, his son, Jobe Watson, was selected by Essendon under the father-and-son rule. Tim and Jobe were tutored by Kevin Sheedy. Tim also has a younger brother, Rick, who now lives in Tocumwal in the New South Ribs. As of mid-2022, Tim and his better half Susie Watson are still married and leading a happy life with his children Jobe Watson and daughters Billie Watson and Tess Watson.
