Tennessee Kroger shooting: Gunman kills 1, injures 12 before shooting self as people hid in freezers

Tennessee Kroger shooting

Chaos unfolded in the aisles of a Tennessee supermarket Thursday afternoon, with people hiding in freezers to escape gunfire that killed one and injured 12 others. The “horrible” shooting occurred inside a Kroger store in Collierville in suburban Memphis around 1:30 pm when police received a shooting call, according to Collierville Police Chief Dale Lane.

“We found people hiding in freezers, in closed offices. They were doing what they had been trained to do: run, hide, fight, ”Chief Lane told reporters at the scene. Brignetta Dickerson, a 33-year-old Kroger employee, told reporters who saw one of his co-workers shot in the head and a customer shot in the stomach after the shooting began at the deli.

He led a group of co-workers and customers to the back of the store while the shooter chased them. “I told everyone, ‘Come on, let’s hurry,’” he said. “Right behind us is our shooter. And he kept shooting, shooting, shooting. He shot one of my co-workers in the head. And he shot another customer in the stomach. ”

The shooter, believed to have acted alone, then pointed the gun at himself, authorities said. Police could not confirm the type of weapon the shooter used, pending further investigation. Twelve victims were taken to local hospitals, some reportedly by helicopter. The chief said at least one other victim checked into the hospital.

Collierville High School was blocked due to the active shooter situation. At 4:15 a.m. Thursday, police said there were still some active scenes at the site, including the shooter’s car, which has yet to be searched while authorities wait for the appropriate equipment. “It’s horrible,” Lane said. “I’ve been involved in this for 34 years and I’ve never seen anything like it.”

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and the Memphis Police Department are also assisting the local police department, as are ATF officers. Kroger, which operates supermarkets throughout the southern and midwestern United States, said it would cooperate with the investigation and offer advisory services to its employees.

“The entire Kroger family offers our thoughts, prayers, and support to the individuals and families of the victims during this difficult time,” a spokesperson for the network told The Post. “We are cooperating with the local police, who have secured the store and the parking lot. The store will be closed while the police investigation continues and we have initiated advisory services for our associates. ”
