Summer Taylor was participating in a peaceful protest for BLM in Seattle on July 4th when she was severely injured when a car drove into the crowd and struck them n I-5 near the Olive Way overpass. She was rushed to Harborview Hospital and then to the ICU. Taylor was later pronounced dead on Sunday, June 5th. The other victim, 32-year-old Diaz Love remains in serious condition in the ICU.

The police are trying to figure out the motive behind the killing, but so far have ruled out impairment. They also can’t tell how he got on to the interstate when it was closed by state patrol for over an hour before the protestors were hit by his car.

Taylor worked at a veterinary clinic and is described as “an incredibly strong and independent spirit”. “Summer is a bright and caring person whose presence elicits joy and laughter in others”.

Taylor wasn’t the only one injured by Kelete’s rampant driving. Diaz Love, 32, was also struck in the hit-and-run. They were filming a Facebook Live when the car sped through the crowd. They are in serious condition at the Harborview Medical Centre.

Following Taylor’s demise, Twitter is left feeling restless, saddened and angry. “Heartbreaking to hear that one of the protesters hit in Seattle last night has died rest in peace Summer Taylor,” tweeted one. “My heart is full of nothing but love and respect for Summer Taylor, rest in peace angel, i promise your death wasn’t in vain :(” added another.

There are many who are defending driver in the face of the protests. “The victim who died today, Summer Taylor, was a friend from high school. Anyone who wants to support that fucking driver? Or the WA State Patrol who were victim-blaming the entire time? Ya’ll can kiss my f***ing fist,” tweeted an angry user.

“A brief reminder that is illegal in all 50 states to hit pedestrians with your car. No ifs, ands, or buts. They always have the right of way, no matter what, and there is no justifying the death of Summer Taylor, who was hit on a CLOSED highway,” added another.

But the fight goes on. “Their name was Summer Taylor. They were twenty-four years old. They were murdered in cold blood. Remember what they died for. Keep marching. Keep protesting. No justice, no peace. #seattleprotest #seattleprotests”.

The other victim, a 32-year-old Bellingham woman, suffered serious injuries. They have been identified as Diaz Love, of Bellingham, and Summer Taylor, of Seattle, according to the AP.

One of the victims, Diaz Love, a native of Boise, Idaho, was streaming live vide on Facebook when she and Summer Taylor were struck by the car. She posted just before midnight and had been streaming for about an hour and 45 minutes before the incident occurred. She wrote in the Facebook post, “#watch Black Femme March takes I-5 #chop #seattleprotest.”

The video shows Love recording other protesters dancing and listening to music on the highway and talking to each other. Protesters can be seen talking and sitting on the highway in Love’s Facebook Live video. Then someone notices the Jaguar approaching and began saying, “car.” The warnings of an approaching car grow louder as Love and the other protesters try to run out of the way. The live stream ends with the car slamming into Love and her phone spinning through the air.

Attack on Protesters


In another video shared on Twitter, a man approached the vehicle and yells at him to get out of the car. He approached the white Jaguar, bangs on the door, and again yells from to get out, but instead, the vehicle speeds off down the road.


Dawit Kelete, of Seattle, was arrested, The Associated Press reports. Washington State Patrol Captain Ron Mead said during a press conference. He also said that the driver was not impaired while driving. Police are still investigating the incident and motive, but the suspect faces felony charges, according to the AP.

Video of a white Jaguar plowing into two protestors while speeding down Interstate 5 Seattle during the early morning on July 4 went viral on Twitter. The protestors are seen walking on the highway, which has been closed to vehicles for 19 days because of the protests. The two women hit by the car were seriously injured.

Washington State Patrol tweeted out photos of the suspect’s vehicle, which only showed minor damage to the windshield and bumper following the incident.

Mead said, “My hope is, as a result of this tragedy, protesters will reconsider their desire to be on the interstate because I cannot guarantee their safety, plain and simple.”

During ongoing Black Lives Matter protests in the name of George Floyd, a black who died as a Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds, Seattle has continued to be a city of unrest amid the ongoing nationwide protests.

The driver, Dawit Kelete, had driven around vehicles that were blocking Interstate 5 and onto the highway about 1:40 a.m., before striking the protesters, according to a police report from the Washington State Patrol obtained by the AP.
