Stephen Barriskill Killed – Suspect
A murder investigation was launched after the discovery of a man’s body in Portadown on Wednesday. The victim, locally named Stephen Barriskill, was alleged to have been shot and killed in his home Tuesday night. Police learned of the incident after a man turned himself in on Wednesday.
The body was discovered in a house in Whitesides Hill. Subsequently, a suspect was arrested on suspicion of murder. The victim was well known in the area and had lived on the property for some time. On Wednesday, neighbors expressed shock as they watched a forensic team conduct their investigations. Independent local councilor Darryn Causby described Whitesides Hill as a “quiet rural area.”
“This is the second murder in the city in as many weeks. That is concerning, ”added Mr. Causby. We do not know the circumstances, but obviously my thoughts are with the loved ones of the deceased person because the loss for no one is never easy. Sinn Fein Councilor Paul Duffy said there had been a series of deaths in “suspicious circumstances” in recent weeks in the Portadown area and that it was “very concerning.”
A PSNI Chief Inspector of Detectives said: “Just after 12:07 pm this afternoon, police responding to an incident report located the body of a deceased man on residential property in the Whitesides Hill area of Portadown. A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.
“My investigation is at a very early stage and I would appeal to anyone who has been in the Whitesides Hill area since 8 pm yesterday (Tuesday) and who has witnessed something suspicious to contact detectives at 101, citing reference 773 from 10/27/21 “.
It is the fourth local murder in the last fortnight and the second in Portadown in the last few weeks. Jake Bailey-Sloan (23) died after an incident in the city on October 17. Separate murder investigations were also launched after midwife Katrina Rainey was discovered in a burning car in the early hours of October 12 at the family farm in Knockloughrim, between Magherafelt and Maghera.
