After graduating from graduate school, Spencer Cox clerked for Judge Ted Stewart of the United States District Court for the District of Utah. He started working for Fabian and Clendenin, a law firm. He later returned to Utah to become vice president of CentraCom. In 2004, he was elected to the Fairview City Council, and in 2005, he was elected mayor.
