The recovery effort continues at the ruins of Champlain Tower South in Surfside, a 12-story building that partially collapsed on June 24. The official death toll reached 64 Thursday night with 76 people still missing. Work at the site changed this week from a search and rescue effort to working to recover debris from the rubble mounds.

The bodies of the Paraguayan president’s sister-in-law, her husband and their youngest son were found Thursday, July 8, within the rubble after the fatal collapse of the Surfside condo in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The Foreign Minister of Paraguay, Euclides Acevedo, confirmed that the remains of Sophia López Moreira were discovered along with those of her husband, Luis Pettengill, and her youngest son, since the death toll rises to 64.

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said that since the tragedy, only 40 bodies have been identified. He also said the final death toll could reach 140. Speaking to CNN, Cava added: “Our Miami-Dade County Task Force 1 members, who have been here from the beginning, could go home, but ‘ we’re still here, ”even though it’s clear that finding someone alive in the rubble is nearly impossible.

Meanwhile, in addition to Sophia and her family, Miami-Dade police also identified five more victims of the collapse. One of them was Juan Alberto Mora Jr, 32, who came to visit his parents Ana and Juan Mora Sr from Chicago at the time. Oscar Cepero, a classmate of Mora’s from Miami’s Belen Jesuit High School, said hours before the collapse they went fishing together. Cepero said, “I was like, this looks like his parents’ place,” Cepero said. “I went to the reunification site and was looking for them, but no one was giving me information.” The bodies of Mora Jr’s parents have yet to be found.

Another identified victim is 56-year-old architect Andrea Cattarossi, who came to visit her sister Graciela Cattarossi, her seven-year-old daughter Stella Cattarossi and her parents Gino and Graciela Cattarossi from Argentina. Mariela Porras, a friend of Cattarossi’s family said: “I am angry that this happened. You can call it a tragedy, but for me, it is pure negligence. ”

A 36-year-old doctor identified as Ruslan Manashirov also died in the collapse. He had recently married Nicole Doran-Manashirov, 43. His family and friends have organized a GoFundMe to cover the family’s expenses. Susan DeRisi, a friend of the couple, said Ruslan “just wrapped you up with his personality.” The fundraising page has already raised $ 32,280 of its goal of $ 50,000.

Another victim was Harry Rosenberg, 52. A Lakewood rabbi and family friend said: “[Rosenberg’s] wife died last year of cancer, and his parents died of Covid. That’s one of the reasons he went there, just to ventilate a little for a year. “Gloria Machado, 71, also died in the tragedy. She was on the 11th floor of the condo.
