Sian Proctor’s Parents: Her Mother & Father Inspired Her

Dr. Sian Proctor is one of four crew members in SpaceX’s Mission Inspiration4. She is a geoscientist and science communications specialist who has said that going into space is a dream come true for her. Who are your parents and where were you born? On his website, MySpace2Inspire, Proctor wrote on his father: “If it weren’t for my father’s NASA memories, his contributions to NASA and his help in putting the first human being on the moon would be lost to history. I really want to continue my father’s legacy of advancing human spaceflight, but not as a hidden figure. I want to be the first black commercial female astronaut. ”

She shared that her father died when she was 19 and her mother died when she was 48. The isolated nature of COVID-19 helped her become more creative and ultimately the Inspiration4 opportunity.

Attorney shared Aug 12 who won the Prosperity spot on Inspiration4 when he “opened a @ Shift4Shop called My Space2inspire and then created a unique poem called # Space2inspire.”

She was born in Guam and is considered a baby of NASA’s lunar celebration

Proctor was born on Guam in the western Pacific, Space Flight Insider reported. He was born at Guam Memorial Hospital, Pacific Daily News reported.

Then he moved to Minnesota.

Proctor said of her birth: “I consider myself a #NASA Moon celebration baby because I was born 8.5 months after Armstrong took those famous first steps.”

She is now the fourth African-American woman to travel in orbit and the first black female spacecraft pilot. Inspiration4 will be orbiting the Earth for three days.

His dad worked with the Apollo Moon mission

Proctor’s parents are Edward Langley Proctor Jr. and Gloria Deloris Proctor, Space Flight Insider reported. While Proctor grew up in Guam, his father worked for NASA and kept track of the Apollo program flights, Space Flight Insider reported. He was an engineer and contractor for Sperry UNIVAC, NSTA reported.

Attorney tweeted on his father’s work in Guam: “In December 1966, my father became a Senior Computer Engineering Technician at Bendix Corp. He was assigned to Guam and was in charge of follow-up operations for the Lunar Surface Experiment Package Apollo #NASA (ALSEP) and much more! He worked on Apollo 7-13 missions while in Guam. ”

Proctor said that his father was a self-taught scientist. In a series of tweetsShe shared that he loved to learn and that he was the youngest technician and the first black person hired by Electro Data Corp. His first job was as a radio and television technician. From 1960 to 1961, he was an “electronic technician who calibrated aerial navigation systems by Doppler radar.”

She added that in 1962 he was hired by the federal government as an inertial guidance systems analyst and worked on the Atlas, Titan and Minuteman ICBMs and missiles.

His father died of lung cancer when he was only 48 years old, Proctor shared in a tweet.

She wrote: “My father’s lung cancer was supposedly in remission. The day I went to New York, my dad was not feeling well, so when I went to give him a hug he said no, see you when you get back. He had a severe asthma attack and passed away that night. He was 48 years old. 😢 ”

His parents met at a New Years Eve party

Proctor tweeted her parents met at a 1962 New Years Eve party in Harlem.

She wrote: “He took her and her roommate home after the party and asked if she would make him a cup of coffee. They were married 3.5 months later. He was 23 and she was 29. ”

She said they moved to Cocoa Beach in 1965, where he worked for RCA and was later assigned to a missile-tracking ship, the USNS HS Vandenberg. She tweeted that during the year she was at the Vandenberg, she wrote more than 30 letters to her mother.

In a series of tweets, Proctor revealed more about his family. She said that her grandfather He earned a bachelor’s degree in social science from Youngstown University in 1939.

His father, he added, was raised by two strong women: his great-grandmother and his Nana. His great grandmother, Rev. Elizabeth Powell, was inducted into the Ohio Women’s Hall of Fame in 2001.

She said her parents always supported her

His parents always encouraged and supported Proctor and his siblings, he told NSTA. In a series of tweets, she added that her mother used to worry about her because she was so independent as a child.

She wrote: “I was labeled a tomboy, what I learned early meant that boys could do fun things that girls shouldn’t. I loved fishing, playing sports, and most of all, I loved building airplanes and dreaming of being a fighter pilot. ”

She added that her father supported her in all her interests. “He never told me he couldn’t do it,” she said.

She said He finally chose his major when they were in the car and his mom suggested it while flipping through a college catalog. She wrote in a series of tweets:

Everything changed in HS. I have glasses = not a military aviator and my father has lung cancer in the last year. I did not race on the track that year and left the civil air patrol. I did not visit schools for college and my father insisted that I apply and go to Edinboro U, where my brother was. I was a teenager. I remember my parents taking me to Edinboro in the fall of 1988. I was in the back seat, arms crossed and defiant. My mother was flipping through the course catalog and said, “You should specialize in this, Environmental Science.” I said well. This is how I chose my specialty. So why was he so angry …

If you are the younger brother, then you can identify with this. My brother Chris was the typical older brother growing up. In other words, he was mean and he used to mess with me. I thought college was my escape and instead my parents sent me to be with my older brother. WTF !! … Going to college with my brother Chris turned out to be the best thing I’ve ever had! I remember the day he came to get me. I thought it was going to be the same old BS, but instead he said, ‘Come on.’ I was like where? Let’s go to the party! We spent 3.5 years together and we became very close.

Her mom inspired her because she wasn’t afraid

His mother, grandmother and great-grandmother also left, he shared.

She wrote on Twitter: “My mom, my grandmother and my great grandmother have passed away and I miss them. I will take this photo of them into space with me as a reminder of how lucky I am to have had strong women in my life. ”

He said his mother was born outside Salisbury, Maryland, in 1933. “What I love about my mother is that she was not afraid,” he shared in a tweet. “The day after graduating from high school, she was waiting on the bus to New York (1951). He lived in Harlem and worked at Mount Sinai Hospital. ”

His mother would be 88 years old if she were still alive.
