Dennison graduated from Rocky Mountain High School in 1976, having excelled in football, baseball, and basketball. Later, he pursued his athletic and intellectual interests at Colorado State University. Dennison moved to the NFL and played linebacker with the Denver Broncos from 1982 to 1990, contributing to four Super Bowl appearances. His coaching career started in 1995 with the Broncos. He worked as an offensive assistant, special teams coordinator, and offensive line coach until 2009.

Dennison later served as offensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos (2006-2008, 2015-2016), the Houston Texans (2010-2013), and the Buffalo Bills (2017). He also served as quarterbacks coach for the Baltimore Ravens in 2014. In addition to the Broncos, Dennison’s coaching abilities expanded to the New York Jets in 2018. It resulted in his appointment as the Minnesota Vikings’ senior offensive adviser from 2019 to 2021.
