Who is Sanjay Kapoor?
Indian actor and producer Sanjay Surinder Kapoor was born in Bombay, Maharashtra, India, on 17 October 1965, making Libra his zodiac sign. He has 46 acting credits, and is perhaps still known best for portraying Ranjit Rolly in the 2009 drama movie “Luck by Chance”, which starred Farhan Akhtar and Konkota Sen Sharma, and was written and directed by Zoya Akhtar. It follows Vikram who’s been cast to star in a Bollywood movie, but the role might mean the end of his long-term relationship; the movie won eight of its 27 award nominations.
Sanjay’s today highly active in the film industry, and is currently shooting for two movies: “Murder Mubarak” and “Merry Christmas”.
Education and early life
Sanjay was raised in Bombay by his father Surinder Kapoor who was a film producer and who died aged 85 on 24 September 2011, and mother Nirmal Kapoor who was a housewife; famous Indian actor and producer Anil Kapoor is Sanjay’s brother, and their other two siblings are Reena Marwah and Boney Kapoor. Many of Sanjay’s nieces and nephews are today popular actors and actresses, including Harshvardhan Kapoor, Arjun Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor.
Sanjay fell in love with acting while attending a local high school, looking up to his family members who had already launched their careers; he appeared in a number of school plays and then also began winning roles in theatre plays.
Sanjay matriculated in 1984 and then enrolled at college from which he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in 1988; it remains unknown what he did for the following seven years, prior to making his debut film appearance in 1995, portraying Shantanu in the romantic action “Prem”.
Roles in movies
Sanjay played Karan Singh in the 1995 action thriller “Kartavya”, and some of his following roles were in the 1995 action comedy “Raja”, the 1996 family action “Beqabu” and the 1997 action musical “Auzaar”. What marked the ‘90s for him was perhaps starring as Deepak in the 1999 romantic drama “Only You”, which also starred Priya Gill and Sushmita Sen, and was written and directed by Ahathian. It follows Deepak who’s returned Aarti’s lost luggage to her, while they’ve now fallen in love; the film won one of its three award nominations.
Sanjay started off the 2000s by starring in the 2001 romantic musical “Chhupa Rustam: A Musical Thriller”, the 2002 romantic musical “Koi Mere Dil se Poochhe” and the 2002 mystery thriller “Soch”. Also in 2002, he played Shekhar in the action thriller “Shakthi: The Power”, which starred Karisma Kapoor and Nana Patekar, and was written and directed by Krishna Vamsi. It follows a married couple as they’re visiting their families in India, and the movie won one of the 11 awards for which it was nominated. Some of Sanjay’s following roles were in the 2003 musical comedy “Kal Ho Naa Ho”, the 2004 romantic drama “Julie” and the 2005 horror “Anjaane: The Unknown”.
He played a supporting character in the 2007 crime mystery “Dosh”, which also starred Sadashiv Amrapurkar and Kulbir Badesron, and was directed by Pappu Palviendra. It follows wealthy widower Vikram Chopra who’s just learned that his only son’s been murdered. Sanjay appeared in two movies in the remainder of the 2000s: the 2009 crime comedy “Kirkit” and the 2010 action science fiction thriller “Prince”.
In 2018, he portrayed Salman in the popular romantic drama “Lust Stories”, which also starred Kiara Advani and Vicky Kaushal, and was directed by Zoya Akhtar and Dibakar Banerjee. It’s a compilation of four short films about love and sex, and the movie won one of its four award nominations.
Some of Sanjay’s most recent film roles have been in the 2019 mystery “Bedhab”, the 2021 drama “Friction” and the 2023 crime action “Bloody Daddy”.
Roles in TV series
Sanjay’s debut TV series role was starring as Amar in all 260 episodes of the 2003 drama “Karishma: The Miracles of Destiny”, which also starred Karisma Kapoor and Arshad Warsi, and follows Devyani who’s goes from being a village belle to a successful entrepreneur.
His following TV series role came in 2017, when cast to star as Anant Mathur in 74 episodes of the drama “Dil Sambhal Jaa Zara”, which also starred Smriti Kalra and Aashim Gulati, and was created by Vikram Bhatt; it follows young girl Ahana who’s fallen for middle-aged man Anant.
Sanjay portrayed Sharad Sayay in the 2020 episode “Sleeping Partner” of the romantic comedy “Zindagi inShort”, and the following year saw him play Arup in all eight episodes of the 2021 crime fantasy “The Last Hour”; he’s since appeared in only three TV series, portraying Nikhil More in all eight episodes of the 2022 mystery thriller “The Fame Game”, Rajeev Gujral in all 10 episodes of the 2022 crime thriller “The Gone Game” and Ashok Malhotra in the 2023 episode “And They Lived Happily Ever After” of the romantic drama “Made in Heaven”.
Other credits
Sanjay worked as a production controller and co-ordinator on the 1980 action movie “Hum Paanch”, the 1983 romantic movie “Who 7 Din” and the 1993 musical action film “Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja”.
He received special thanks for the 2006 comedy movie “Mixed Doubles” and the 2007 action comedy “Om Shanti Om”.
Some of Sanjay’s recent talk-show appearances have been in “Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives”, “The Kapil Sharma Show” and “India’s Got Talent”.

Sanjay won a 2010 Screen Award for Best Ensemble Cast, for his and his colleagues’ performance in “Luck by Chance”.

He married Indian former actress and model Maheep Sandhu in a large traditional Indian ceremony in 1997; Maheep’s been credited with appearing in only a single movie: the 1994 short musical “Nigori Kaisi Jawani Hai”. Maheep was born in Delhi, India and attended a local high school in London, England while she then studied fashion designing at a college in Australia. She then began working as a model in Delhi, walking the catwalk for various popular Indian designers
Maheep gave birth to her and Sanjay’s daughter Shanaya not long after their wedding, and their son Jahaan followed in June 2005.
There are no other women whom Sanjay’s perhaps been with, that we know about; he’s married to Maheep Kapoor as of August 2023, and they have two children together.
